JUDO: A modern Japanese open-handed martial art founded by JIGORO KANO in 1882. Judo, which literally means the "gentle way," developed from JUJUTSU, a medieval Japanese fighting art. Using only unarmed techniques, Judo exclusively employs throws and locks rather than kicks or punches (see also Judo article).
